It’s time to draft a creative brief for your sign project. A creative brief is a kind of mini interpretive plan, designed to be concise and to the point—just like your signs.

Open a word processing or text document. On it, flesh out the following in four paragraphs or less. Point form is fine; the idea is to put some thoughts together before the first webinar when you will share and brainstorm these in a small breakout group.

  1. What are your goals for your sign project? What impact do you want to see in your visitors, your resource, your organization? Be realistic with these—it’s ok to have only one.
    • What are your indicators of success for those goals?
  2. Who is your top-priority target audience for your sign(s)? Who do you need to reach to meet your goals? Describe them as if they were a character in a play, including their life stage, group dynamic, geographic origin, patterns of visitation at your site (how much time they spend, what they’ll be doing). Describe their knowledge, attitudes, misconceptions and expectations in relation to your subject matter. It’s OK if you don’t know all of these; write what you can and don’t make sh*t up.
  3. Where are you thinking of locating your sign(s)? Do you have evidence that your target audience will find and respond to your sign there?
  4. Describe your creative approach here. What will the sign look like? What will its tone be? What will the reader feel and know after encountering it? It’s ok if you don’t know all of these things yet; you’ll have time to brainstorm this with others.

Thanks for touring this unit as a visitor. When you sign up to take the course, you can submit your creative brief—and other sign work in progress—to Don for mentoring and feedback.
